How hours and minutes become one decimal

The hours stay as they are; only the minutes change. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 plus 45 ÷ 60, which is 7 + 0.75 = 7.75. The trap is writing the minutes after a point unchanged: 7.45 would be 7 hours and 27 minutes, not 7 hours 45 minutes.

Minutes above 59 are fine to enter. 2 hours 90 minutes is 2 + 1.5 = 3.5 hours, the same as 3 hours 30 minutes.

Whole hours and half hours

A whole hour is simply 1.00, and half an hour is 0.50, so an hour and a half is 1.5. The table runs in half-hour steps; any other minute count comes from the minutes to decimal chart.

Add the hours and the minutes in separate columns, carry every 60 minutes into the hours, then convert once at the end. Three tasks of 2 h 50 min, 3 h 25 min and 1 h 10 min add up to 6 hours 85 minutes, which is 7 hours 25 minutes, or 7.42 decimal hours. Converting each task first and rounding each to two places can drift the total by a hundredth or two.
